Mood Disorder
Depression
ذہنی اداسی / ڈپریشن

Depression drains energy, disrupts sleep and appetite, and makes the simplest tasks feel impossible. It is one of the most common and most treatable conditions in psychiatry — affecting millions of people in Pakistan who believe they are just "weak" or "ungrateful".

Common signals

Persistent low moodLoss of interestFatigueSleep changesHopelessness
Anxiety Disorder
Generalised Anxiety Disorder
عمومی پریشانی کا مرض

Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is not ordinary worry. It is a persistent, uncontrollable state of worry about everyday things — family, health, money, the future — that the person cannot stop despite knowing it is excessive. It is often accompanied by physical symptoms that are mistaken for heart or stomach problems.

Common signals

Excessive worryRestlessnessMuscle tensionDifficulty concentrating
Mood Disorder
Bipolar Disorder
دو قطبی مرض

Bipolar disorder involves cycles of mania (abnormally elevated mood and energy) and depression. It is not simply "mood swings" — the episodes are distinct, prolonged, and can cause serious damage to relationships, careers, and finances if untreated. With the right mood-stabilising medication, most people live full and stable lives.

Common signals

Manic episodesPeriods of depressionImpulsive behaviourReduced need for sleep
Psychotic Disorder
Schizophrenia
شیزوفرینیا

Schizophrenia is a serious but treatable brain condition affecting how a person thinks, feels, and perceives reality. Hallucinations and delusions are common features. With consistent treatment — medication and psychosocial support — most people with schizophrenia live meaningful, functional lives.

Common signals

HallucinationsDelusionsDisorganised thinkingSocial withdrawal
Anxiety / OC Spectrum
OCD
وسواسی مجبوری کا مرض

OCD involves intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) that cause intense distress, and repetitive behaviours or mental acts (compulsions) performed to reduce that distress — temporarily. OCD is not about being neat or organised. It is a debilitating anxiety condition that can consume hours of a person's day.

Common signals

Intrusive thoughtsRepetitive ritualsChecking behavioursContamination fears
Trauma-Related
PTSD
صدمے کے بعد کا مرض

PTSD develops after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. The nervous system becomes stuck in a state of threat — replaying the trauma through flashbacks and nightmares, and keeping the person in a state of hypervigilance that is exhausting and debilitating. Specialist therapy can resolve PTSD completely.

Common signals

FlashbacksNightmaresHypervigilanceEmotional numbing
Neurodevelopmental
ADHD
توجہ کی کمی اور جوش کا مرض

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting attention, impulse control, and activity levels. It is not caused by bad parenting, screen time, or sugar. It is a brain difference — and with the right combination of medication and behavioural strategies, children and adults with ADHD can thrive.

Common signals

Poor concentrationImpulsivityHyperactivityDisorganisation
Neurodevelopmental
Autism Spectrum Disorder
آٹزم / طیف کا مرض

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition affecting communication, social interaction, and behaviour. It is a spectrum — no two people experience it the same way. Early diagnosis and structured, individualised support can make an enormous difference to a child's development.

Common signals

Social difficultiesRepetitive behavioursSensory sensitivitiesCommunication differences
Eating & Body Image
Eating Disorders
کھانے کی خرابی

Eating disorders — anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder — are serious psychiatric conditions with the highest mortality rate of any mental health condition. They are not about vanity or food. They are about control, distress, and a distorted relationship with body and self. They require specialist treatment.

Common signals

Restrictive eatingPurging behavioursDistorted body imageMedical complications
Substance Use
Addiction & Substance Use
نشے کی لت

Addiction is a chronic brain disease involving compulsive substance use despite harmful consequences. It is not a failure of willpower or morality. The brain's reward system becomes altered, making stopping extraordinarily difficult without professional help. Recovery is possible — and confidentiality at ASPI is absolute.

Common signals

Loss of controlWithdrawal symptomsNeglecting responsibilitiesContinued use despite harm
Anxiety Disorder
Panic Disorder
گھبراہٹ کے دورے

Panic attacks are sudden, intense surges of fear with overwhelming physical symptoms — racing heart, chest tightness, shortness of breath — that peak within minutes. Panic disorder develops when a person becomes afraid of having another panic attack. It is completely treatable and very common.

Common signals

Sudden intense fearRacing heartShortness of breathFear of dying
Personality
Personality Disorders
شخصیت کے امراض

Personality disorders involve enduring, inflexible patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that differ significantly from cultural expectations and cause significant distress or functional impairment. They are not character flaws — they are established mental health conditions with effective treatments.

Common signals

Unstable relationshipsEmotional dysregulationIdentity disturbanceImpulsivity
Women's Mental Health
Postnatal Depression
زچگی کے بعد اداسی

Postnatal depression affects up to 1 in 5 new mothers. It is not "baby blues" — which lasts a few days — and it is not a sign of being a bad mother or not loving your baby. It is a medical condition caused by hormonal changes and the overwhelming demands of new parenthood. Treatment works very well.

Common signals

Persistent sadnessDifficulty bondingAnxiety about babyFeeling like a failure
Sleep & Related
Sleep Disorders
نیند کے امراض

Chronic insomnia and other sleep disorders are both a symptom and a cause of other mental health conditions. Sleep is not a luxury — it is a biological necessity. ASPI treats sleep disorders directly, using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), the gold-standard treatment that outperforms sleeping pills.

Common signals

Difficulty falling asleepEarly wakingDaytime fatigueNon-restorative sleep

You Do Not Need a Name for It Yet

ابھی نام جاننا ضروری نہیں

Many people come to ASPI without a diagnosis — just a feeling that something is wrong and has been wrong for too long. That is enough to make an appointment.

A psychiatrist's job is to listen, assess, and make sense of what you are experiencing. You do not need to arrive with answers — only with a willingness to be honest.

A Note on This Library

This is education, not diagnosis.

یہ تعلیم ہے، تشخیص نہیں۔

Every page in this library has been written with clinical oversight by ASPI's psychiatric team. The information is accurate and evidence-based. However, reading about a condition is not the same as being assessed for it.

Mental health conditions present differently in different people. Two people can have the same diagnosis and share very few symptoms. Only a qualified psychiatrist — through a full clinical assessment — can diagnose a mental health condition and recommend appropriate treatment.

If you recognise yourself or a loved one in any of these descriptions, the next step is not more reading. It is making an appointment. We are here when you are ready.
