The salaries were better. The facilities were world-class. The professional recognition was easier. But the patients who needed me most were here, in Karachi.
I came back. We opened ASPI's first clinic in a modest building in Clifton. We had two consulting rooms and one nurse. Today we have two inpatient wards, twenty clinical staff, and a website that reaches patients and families across Pakistan. But the animating belief has not changed.
Mental illness is not weakness. It is not a failure of faith or family. It is a medical condition that responds to treatment — like any other. Every Pakistani deserves to know this. Every Pakistani deserves access to that treatment, in their own language, without shame.
That is what ASPI is for.

ASPI opened its first dedicated inpatient ward — 12 beds — allowing for the treatment of acute psychiatric conditions. The first in Karachi to adopt a structured family-involvement protocol.

Dr. Nadia Rehman joined as Lead Clinical Psychologist. The same year, ASPI published its first library of patient education materials in Urdu — the first psychiatric institution in Karachi to do so at scale.
Child & Adolescent Programmeبچوں کا پروگرام
Dr. Zain Khan joined as ASPI's first dedicated child and adolescent psychiatrist, establishing Karachi's only sub-specialist paediatric psychiatric service within a full adult psychiatric institute.

ASPI launched its bilingual digital platform — including AI-assisted daily blog, online booking, and the Urdu Resource Library — to extend its reach beyond the clinic walls and serve patients and families across Pakistan.
